Overview: GroupWise Messenger 1.0
Disadvantages
of GroupWise Messenger
With the enhanced security, privacy, logging,
and productivity you gain, it's hard to believe there could
be any disadvantages. Realistically, you should just be aware
of the following. They aren't necessarily bad:
- GroupWise Messenger is in it's first release.
It is obvious that it is a first generation product, because
it
lacks several features you might be used to in other instant
messengers. For example, you can not transfer files, and
the Emoticons are pretty lame.
- The Messenger is not licensed to be purchased separately.
The only way to get GroupWise Messenger, at the time of this
writing, is to purchase GroupWise 6.5.
- It is difficult to add contacts to your custom list.
Instead of having a list of all users to choose from, you have
to do a search based on name, title, etc.
- The GroupWise Messenger agents on the server
require a User ID and Password to load and operate. The User
ID and
Password
are stored in a configuration file in
clear text. This
could be seen as a security risk, although there are measures
that can be taken to minimize the risk. One obvious action
is to ensure that no unauthorized users have access to the
directory. The second step would be to use a non-administrator
User ID for the account: one that has no other access in the
tree, and also has a different password than any other administrative
account. This way, if the password is compromised, it would
be a minimal threat to overall security.
